Netherlands post-study work

Netherlands orientation year (zoekjaar) for Indian graduates: 1 year to find a job

The orientation year permit lets recent graduates, PhD holders and researchers stay in the Netherlands for up to one year to look for work or start a business. You can apply within 3 years of finishing your degree, you can work without a separate work permit for your employer, and the permit cannot be extended. If your degree is from outside the Netherlands, your institution must meet a ranking rule.

What the orientation year is

The orientation year (in Dutch, zoekjaar) is the Netherlands' main post-study route for people who have a higher-education qualification. The Dutch immigration service (IND) describes it as a residence permit for recently graduated students, PhD graduates and researchers. It applies to graduates of Dutch universities and to graduates of certain foreign institutions, so it also matters if you finished a degree in India and want to move.

It gives you time to find a job, move to another permit or start a business. For the study stage, see our Netherlands student visa guide and Study in the Netherlands page.

Who qualifies

  • Timing: you apply within 3 years of completing your studies, PhD or research. A new permit can be granted after another completed programme, provided it was completed after your previous orientation-year permit expired.
  • Dutch degree: a degree from a Dutch institution meets the general condition.
  • Foreign degree: the institution must be a designated international educational institution, meaning it ranked in the top 200 of at least two major rankings, from at least two different publishers, on your completion date. Check your nationality and institution on the IND website.
  • General conditions: you must meet the IND's general conditions for a residence permit. If you live abroad, you may need a provisional residence permit (MVV) from the Dutch embassy or consulate.

Your rights during the year

During the orientation year you can work or start a business without restrictions, and employers do not need a separate work permit for you. The permit cannot be extended. To stay longer you must switch to another permit before it ends.

QuestionAnswer
How long is it?Up to 1 year
Can I extend it?No. You must apply for a different permit
Do I need an employer to apply? No
Can I freelance or start a business?Yes
Is the fee refundable? No. The application fee is not refunded if you are refused

After the orientation year: the next permit

The common next step is a highly skilled migrant permit sponsored by a recognised employer. Income requirements apply only when you switch, and the threshold for recent graduates is lower than the standard one. The exact amounts change each year, so check the IND website. Employers in tech, engineering and research often sponsor graduates, so start your search in the first months, not the last.

Plan before you choose a degree. If a post-study year matters to you, compare it with Germany's 18-month job seeker permit and see Germany vs Netherlands for MS.

Step-by-step plan

  1. Confirm eligibility for your degree and institution, and note your 3-year window.
  2. Gather documents: passport, degree proof, and any extra evidence the IND requests.
  3. Apply to the IND and pay the fee. If you live outside the Netherlands, check whether an MVV is needed.
  4. Search actively for jobs with sponsor-recognised employers and keep records of applications.
  5. Switch permits before the year ends once you have an offer.
