CGPA to GPA converter
To turn an Indian CGPA on a 10-point scale into a US 4.0 GPA, divide by 10 and multiply by 4: an 8.0 CGPA is about 3.2. That ratio is what most students quote, but it can undersell a strong record, because evaluators such as WES convert each course instead. This converter gives you the 4.0 GPA, the percentage and the German grade in one go.
Formula. GPA (4.0) = CGPA ÷ scale × 4. German grade = 1 + 3 × (max − your CGPA) ÷ (max − pass mark). Percentage on most Indian 10-point scales = CGPA × 9.5, unless your university publishes its own rule (see the CGPA to percentage calculator).

Why the simple formula can undersell you
Indian grading is strict: a 75% is a strong first class, while in the US it reads like a C. A straight ratio carries that strictness across. Credential evaluators avoid this by converting each course grade into a US letter grade and then averaging by credits, which is why two students with the same CGPA can come out with different evaluated GPAs.
How WES and other evaluators calculate it
- They take every course from your official transcripts, including repeated attempts.
- Each mark or grade is converted to a US grade (A, B, C...) using the grading scale of your university.
- Grades are weighted by credits or hours and averaged into a cumulative GPA.
Use an evaluator only if your universities ask for one. Many US programmes accept your Indian transcript as it is and do their own review.
Converting for Germany
German universities and uni-assist apply the modified Bavarian formula to your final grade. Best grade on your scale (usually 10), the minimum pass mark (often 4 or 5; check your transcript legend) and your CGPA give a German grade between 1.0 and 4.0, where lower is better. Programmes with a grade cut-off, for example 2.5, compare against this number. Planning the costs too? Read about the blocked account for Germany.

How do I convert CGPA to GPA on a 4.0 scale?
Divide your CGPA by the maximum of your scale and multiply by 4. On a 10-point scale, 8.0 ÷ 10 × 4 = 3.2. This simple ratio is what most students quote, but evaluators such as WES work from your course-by-course marks instead, and their result is often higher.
What is 8 CGPA in GPA?
About 3.2 on a 4.0 scale using the simple ratio (8 ÷ 10 × 4). A credential evaluator converting your individual course grades may arrive at a different figure.
What is 7.5 CGPA in GPA?
3.0 on a 4.0 scale using the simple ratio. In percentage, 7.5 × 9.5 = 71.25% under the CBSE formula.
Is 8 CGPA good for MS in the USA?
An 8.0 CGPA (about 3.2 linear) is competitive for many US master's programmes, especially with relevant experience, projects and a solid GRE where required. The most selective programmes admit many students above 8.5. Admission depends on the whole profile, not the GPA alone.
Does WES convert CGPA to GPA?
WES does not apply a single CGPA formula. It converts each course grade or mark on your transcript into a US grade and computes a credit-weighted GPA. That is why a WES GPA can be higher than CGPA ÷ 10 × 4.
How do I convert CGPA to the German grade?
Most German universities use the modified Bavarian formula: German grade = 1 + 3 × (best possible CGPA − your CGPA) ÷ (best possible CGPA − minimum pass CGPA). With 10 as the best, 4 as the pass mark and an 8.0 CGPA, that gives 2.0. In Germany 1.0 is the best grade and 4.0 a pass.
Should I write a converted GPA on my application?
Report your CGPA exactly as it appears on your transcript, with the scale (for example 8.2 / 10). Convert only when the form explicitly asks for a 4.0 GPA, and then follow the university's own instruction or an evaluator's report.
