What Stamp 1G is

Stamp 1G is the immigration permission that lets non-EEA graduates of Irish higher education stay and look for work, or work, after their course ends. Graduates with a bachelor's degree are granted 12 months. Graduates with a master's (level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications) or higher can renew for a further 12 months, which gives 24 months in total. Authorities may ask you to show that you were seeking graduate employment during the first 12 months.

It is one of the reasons Ireland is a strong choice for Indian master's students. See our Study in Ireland guide and Ireland for Indian students overview.

Who is eligible and what you need

  • A valid Stamp 2 from your studies in Ireland.
  • A degree from a recognised Irish university or institution.
  • You can apply once you have passed all your modules, even before the degree certificate is issued.
  • A current passport, proof of medical insurance, university confirmation of the award (including final results if you have no certificate yet) and the €300 fee.

Timing matters. If your Stamp 2 expires while your Stamp 1G application is pending, you can remain for up to eight weeks after expiry. If you need longer, you can write to Immigration Service Delivery for a temporary extension, which is assessed case by case.

How to apply for Stamp 1G

  1. Finish your modules and ask your university for written confirmation of your award and results.
  2. Gather documents: passport, medical insurance, the university letter and your current permission.
  3. Apply through your local route. Dublin residents use the online renewal portal. Residents outside County Dublin contact their local Garda immigration office.
  4. Pay the €300 fee.
  5. Keep your records: evidence of job applications, interviews and any offers, in case the authorities ask for them at renewal.

After Stamp 1G: moving to a work permit

Stamp 1G is a bridge, not a final status. The most common next step is a Critical Skills Employment Permit if you receive an offer in an eligible occupation above the salary threshold, or a General Employment Permit for other roles. Salary thresholds and occupation lists are revised periodically, so check the Department of Enterprise and the Irish immigration service for current figures before accepting an offer.

Check the latest rules before you apply

Irish immigration rules change often. The figures here were verified in October 2026 against published guidance, but the official immigration service is the final authority. Confirm the duration, fee and application method on the official site before you submit.
