Why PhD in Singapore?

SINGA Scholarship — Singapore's Flagship PhD Award

The Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) is jointly offered by A*STAR (Agency for Science, Technology and Research), NUS, NTU, and SUTD. It is fully funded: tuition fee waiver, monthly stipend of SGD 2,200 (year 1–2) rising to SGD 2,600 (year 3+), one-time airfare grant, and accommodation support. SINGA is for PhD research in biomedical sciences, computing, engineering, mathematics, and physical sciences. Indian students apply online at singa.a-star.edu.sg — deadline: June and December annually (two rounds).

NUS President's Graduate Fellowship

The NUS President's Graduate Fellowship (PGF) awards the highest-calibre PhD applicants with an enhanced monthly stipend (SGD 3,000–3,500/month) on top of standard research scholarship. It is awarded by department recommendation — you cannot apply directly. Strong academic records (9.0+ CGPA, research publications, top national rank) are required. Indian IIT/IISc graduates are frequently awarded PGF fellowships at NUS.

A*STAR Research Scholarships

A*STAR (Agency for Science, Technology and Research) is Singapore's national research and technology agency with 21 research institutes. A*STAR NSS (National Science Scholarship) is open to Singaporean citizens only. However, A*STAR International Fellowship and bilateral programs may be open to Indian researchers — check a-star.edu.sg for current opportunities. PhD students can also be co-supervised by A*STAR researchers while registered at NUS/NTU.

Employment Pass & PR After PhD

Singapore PhD graduates from NUS/NTU qualify easily for Employment Pass (EP — minimum salary SGD 5,000/month for new graduates; COMPASS framework). Singapore Permanent Residence (PR) applications are possible after 2–3 years of EP employment. Indian PhD graduates in STEM fields from NUS/NTU have a high PR approval rate given the talent shortage in deep tech and biomedical sectors.
