Germany intakes for Indian students: winter vs summer, and when to apply
German universities have two main intakes. The winter semester starts in October with a typical deadline of 15 July, and the summer semester starts in April with a typical deadline of 15 January. Indian applicants should work backwards from those dates, because the APS certificate alone can take 6 to 10 weeks.

Winter vs summer intake: which should you choose?
| Intake | Classes begin | Typical deadline | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter semester | October | 15 July | The main intake with the widest choice of programmes. Competitive courses often close earlier, around 31 May or 1 June. |
| Summer semester | April | 15 January | Fewer programmes admit in summer, and fewer applicants apply, so processing can be quicker. |
Choose winter if you want the most options and time to prepare. Choose summer if your shortlisted programmes admit in April or you need extra time for exams, APS or your language test. Always read the programme page, because some courses admit only once a year and some use rolling admissions that close when seats fill.
Month-by-month timeline for the winter (October) intake
| Months before start | Key steps |
|---|---|
| 12 | Research programmes, shortlist 5 to 8, check eligibility |
| 10 to 11 | Register for APS, gather transcripts and mark sheets |
| 8 to 9 | Attend the APS interview, take your language test, draft your SOP |
| 6 to 7 | Receive APS, finalise SOP and CV, request recommendation letters |
| 5 | Create your uni-assist account, upload documents, pay fees |
| 4 | Submit applications before the deadlines |
| 3 | Receive admission letters, accept an offer, open a blocked account |
| 2 | Book your visa appointment, apply for the student visa, arrange health insurance |
| 1 | Receive visa, book flights, apply for accommodation |
| 0 | Arrive, register your address, attend orientation |
For a summer (April) intake, shift the same steps to a 15 January deadline: start APS around the previous May to July.
uni-assist or direct application?
Where you apply depends on the university. Many use uni-assist, which asks you to submit well before the university deadline, around 1 June for the 15 July deadline and 1 December for the 15 January deadline. Others have their own portals and set their own dates. Both routes need your APS certificate.
Do not miss the real deadline. The dates on this page are typical. Your programme page is the only source that counts, so note each date in your calendar the day you shortlist.
Money and visa dates to plan alongside
Once you have an admission letter, you need proof of funds, usually a blocked account. The 2026 amount is commonly stated as €11,904 for twelve months. Confirm the figure with your provider. Add costs from our Germany cost guide and look at scholarships, whose deadlines are often earlier than university deadlines.

How many intakes does Germany have?
Two main intakes: the winter semester starting in October and the summer semester starting in April. A few programmes admit only once a year.
What is the application deadline for the Germany winter intake?
Typically 15 July for many universities, though competitive programmes often close earlier. Check each programme page.
What is the deadline for the Germany summer intake?
Typically 15 January, with many programmes admitting only in the winter, so check availability.
When should Indian students start applying for Germany?
Ideally 10 to 12 months before the intake, because the APS certificate and document preparation take months.
Is the winter or summer intake better?
Winter has the widest choice of programmes. Summer can suit you if your programme admits in April and you need more preparation time.
Can I apply after the deadline?
Rarely. Most German universities enforce deadlines strictly, so plan to submit early and keep a buffer.
