APS certificate for Germany: documents, interview and timeline
The APS certificate is the academic credential check that Indian applicants must complete before a German university or uni-assist will process an application. Expect to submit your mark sheets and degree documents, pay a fee of roughly ₹18,000, attend a short interview, and allow 6 to 10 weeks. Start at least six months before your application deadline.

What the APS certificate is and why Germany asks for it
APS stands for Akademische Pruefstelle, the academic evaluation centre attached to the German diplomatic mission in India. It verifies that your Indian certificates are genuine and that your academic background matches what you claim, so that German universities can trust the documents behind an application.
For Indian applicants it is a gate, not a formality. A university or uni-assist will generally not process your application without it, and it is also checked during the student visa process. Treat it as the first task in your Germany plan, not the last.
Documents you will need
- Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and certificates.
- Bachelor's transcripts for all semesters, and the degree certificate or provisional certificate if you have not graduated yet.
- Passport copy and a valid email address and phone number.
- Your intended German course and university details, where requested.
Requirements differ slightly for bachelor's and master's applicants and can be updated, so check the official APS India site for your exact list before you upload.
Step-by-step APS process
- Register on the official APS India portal and create your application.
- Upload your documents as clear, complete scans.
- Pay the fee. It is commonly reported at about ₹18,000. Confirm the current amount on the official site.
- Wait for document verification and your interview slot. This is the longest part of the process.
- Attend the interview. It is short, about 15 to 20 minutes, and covers your coursework, thesis or projects and your reasons for studying in Germany. Answer in your own words and know your own transcript.
- Receive the certificate and attach it to your uni-assist or university application.
Be careful with agents who promise a guaranteed result. The APS interview checks that your background is genuine. Prepare honestly. If you retake the process, an additional fee applies.
APS timeline for a winter (October) intake
A realistic plan works backwards from the university deadline. For a winter semester that begins in October, with applications due around 15 July, most students should start the APS process in the previous November or December.
| Months before intake | What to do |
|---|---|
| 10 to 11 | Register for APS and gather transcripts and mark sheets |
| 8 to 9 | Attend the APS interview and take your language test |
| 6 to 7 | Receive the APS certificate and finalise your SOP and CV |
| 5 | Create your uni-assist account and upload documents |
| 4 | Submit applications before the deadlines |
The same logic applies to the April summer intake: start about six months before the 15 January deadline. See the full Germany intake guide. Check the official APS site for any changes that apply to master's applicants from 2027 intakes.
Mistakes that delay an APS certificate
- Starting after you have chosen universities. APS is the bottleneck, so start first.
- Mismatched names or dates across passport, mark sheets and certificates. Resolve any discrepancy before you upload.
- Unclear scans. Upload complete, legible pages.
- Not knowing your own project or thesis. The interview tests understanding of your own work.
- Ignoring the follow-on steps. After APS you still need a blocked account, health insurance and a visa slot.
