F-1 visa interview questions for Indian students: what to expect and how to prepare
The F-1 interview is short, usually three to five minutes, and officers look at five things: your academic credibility, financial credibility, ties to India, consistency across your DS-160 and documents, and how clearly you answer. Prepare to explain why this course and university, how you will pay, and what you will do after the degree.

Question themes you should expect
- Study plan: why the USA, why this course, why not study in India, and how the course links to your career goals.
- University choice: why this university, how many you applied to and were admitted by, and why its location suits your field.
- Academic background: your CGPA or percentage, test scores, how this course follows from your previous degree, and any gap.
- Finances: who is funding your degree, their occupation and income, the total first-year cost on your I-20, and any education loan.
- After graduation: your plans, whether you intend to return to India, and where your family is.
What the officer is really assessing
US law presumes a visa applicant may want to immigrate, so under Section 214(b) you must show convincing reasons to return home after your studies. That is why every answer should support a credible, specific plan, such as a role or sector in India, rather than a vague statement. Keep answers to two or three sentences, answer the question asked, and make sure what you say matches your DS-160 and documents exactly.
Do not memorise a script. Officers ask follow-ups. Practise with our AI interview coach and know your own numbers: tuition, funding, test scores and course modules.
Documents to carry
- Valid passport, DS-160 confirmation and appointment letter.
- Signed I-20 and SEVIS I-901 fee receipt.
- Original transcripts, degree certificates and test score reports.
- Financial documents: bank statements, sponsor income tax returns and any education loan sanction letter. See our education loan guide.
Fees reported for 2026 include a $350 SEVIS I-901 fee and a $185 visa application fee. A $250 visa integrity fee was enacted in 2025, so check the US Embassy India website for whether and when it applies at your appointment.
Step-by-step: from I-20 to interview
- Receive your I-20 from the university and check every detail.
- Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee and keep the receipt.
- Complete the DS-160 accurately and consistently with your documents.
- Pay the visa fee and book your slot in India as early as you can, since wait times vary by city.
- Practise aloud for a few days using real follow-up questions, then arrive early on the day.
Common reasons for refusal and what to do
A Section 214(b) refusal means the officer was not convinced of your ties or intent to return. It is not a formal ban, and you can apply again, but an identical application is likely to be refused again. Fix the specific gap before you reapply, whether that is finances, test scores, a weak explanation of your course choice or inconsistencies in your documents. A 221(g) is different: it is a temporary administrative hold, often for extra documents. After arriving, read our guides to OPT and STEM OPT and the full F-1 visa process.
