Step 1 — Receive I-20 from university: After admission, your university issues the I-20 form (Certificate of Eligibility). This is the foundation of your F1 application. Step 2 — Pay SEVIS I-901 fee: USD 350 for F1 students. Pay online at fmjfee.com. Keep the receipt. Step 3 — Complete DS-160: The online non-immigrant visa application (ceac.state.gov). Step 6 — Attend visa interview: Bring: passport, DS-160 confirmation, I-20, SEVIS fee receipt, university admission letter, financial documents, and academic transcripts.
Consular officers assess two things: your genuine intent to study, and your ties to India (intent to return). Common questions: Why this university? Why the US? How will you fund your studies? What are your plans after graduation? Be specific, honest, and concise. Avoid scripted-sounding answers. Financial documents should show sufficient funds (USD 25,000–60,000/year depending on program).
Optional Practical Training (OPT): Allows F1 students to work in the US for 12 months in a field related to their degree. STEM graduates (CS, EE, DS, Biology, etc.) qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension — total 36 months of work authorization. Curricular Practical Training (CPT): Work authorization during your program for internships directly related to your coursework. Must be authorised by your university's DSO.
