MS CS vs MS Software Engineering — which is better?
MS CS is broader and more research-oriented — better for those wanting AI/ML roles or research careers. MS SE is focused on engineering practices — system design, software architecture, testing, DevOps. For most industry software engineering roles, MS CS gives more flexibility. MS SE is better if you specifically want to deepen software engineering skills for large-scale systems.
Can I get into top US MS SE programs without a CS degree?
Yes, with prerequisites. CMU MSSE specifically accepts students from non-CS backgrounds (engineering, maths, physics) who show programming aptitude. Prerequisites often include data structures, algorithms, and at least one systems programming course. MCA and BCA graduates have also been admitted with strong profiles.
