Why Study in Japan?

Japan is increasingly popular among Indian students for: world-class technology research (robotics, AI, semiconductors), fully-funded MEXT scholarships, safe and well-organised society, anime/culture appeal, and a growing number of English-taught graduate programs. Japan also has a structured technical intern and Specified Skilled Worker visa pathway after graduation — relevant for engineering graduates.

Japan Student Visa Requirements

To obtain a College Student visa (Ryugaku visa): Certificate of Eligibility (COE) issued by your Japanese university, valid passport, visa application form, photo, academic transcripts, proof of financial capacity (¥1,200,000–¥2,000,000 or equivalent scholarship), and health certificate. The COE is the cornerstone — your university submits it to the Japan Immigration Services Agency on your behalf.

Certificate of Eligibility (COE) Process

After your Japanese university accepts you, they apply for a COE on your behalf at the regional Immigration Services Agency in Japan. This typically takes 1–3 months. Once issued, the COE is sent to you (or uploaded digitally), and you submit it with your visa application at the Embassy of Japan in India (New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, or Bengaluru). Visa is typically issued within 5 business days of COE submission.

Language Requirements

For English-taught programs (increasingly common at Tokyo Tech, Osaka, Tohoku, Kyushu in science/engineering): IELTS 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80. For Japanese-taught programs: JLPT N2 minimum (N1 preferred). Many Indian students start with N5 and work up to N2/N1 over 2–3 years of self-study or Japan Foundation India classes before applying.

MEXT Scholarship — Japan's Flagship Scholarship

The MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) scholarship is fully funded: full tuition waiver + ¥143,000/month (master's/PhD) stipend + return airfare + accommodation allowance. Indian students apply through the Embassy Recommendation track (via the Embassy of Japan in India — deadlines around May each year) or University Recommendation track (contact your target university directly). Competition is high but Indian students with strong STEM profiles and Japanese language are successful.

Work Rights & Part-Time Jobs

College Student visa holders can work up to 28 hours/week (part-time permission — apply immediately on arrival). Common jobs: convenience stores (FamilyMart, 7-Eleven), restaurants, tutoring (English tutors are well paid at ¥2,000–3,500/hour). This can supplement living expenses significantly — Tokyo living costs ~¥100,000–120,000/month.

Top Japanese Universities for Indian Students

University of Tokyo (QS #28), Kyoto University (#46), Osaka University (#80), Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech — #91, focused on STEM), Tohoku University (strong materials science, engineering), Nagoya University (Nobel laureates in physics/chemistry), NAIST (Nara — AI, information science). All have active Indian student communities.
