Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) for Indians: points, funds and work rules
The Chancenkarte is a one-year residence permit that lets qualified non-EU applicants move to Germany to look for a job without a job offer. You need 6 points under the points system, or a fully recognised foreign qualification, plus proof you can support yourself. While you search you may work up to 20 hours a week and try out jobs through trial employment.

What the Opportunity Card is
The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is Germany's points-based job-search permit for skilled workers from outside the EU. Germany's federal migration office describes it as a permit to look for work for up to one year if you have no employment yet. You apply through the German mission in India for the visa, then register with the local immigration office in Germany.
It is aimed at people who have not studied in Germany. If you graduate from a German university, the 18-month job seeker residence permit is usually the better route. The Chancenkarte suits an Indian graduate or professional who wants to move for work after a degree earned in India.
The points system, category by category
You need at least 6 points. A foreign qualification that is fully recognised in Germany can qualify you directly without counting points. The commonly published breakdown is below. Check the official portal for the current table before you apply.
| Category | Criteria | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification | Foreign qualification recognised in Germany | 4 |
| Qualification | University degree (German or foreign) | 3 |
| Language | German B2 or higher | 3 |
| Language | German B1 | 2 |
| Language | German A2, English C1 | 1 each |
| Language | English B2 | 1 |
| Work experience | 5+ years in the last 7, related to your qualification | 3 |
| Work experience | 2 to 5 years in the last 5 | 2 |
| Age | Under 35 | 2 |
| Age | 35 to 40 | 1 |
| Germany connection | Earlier stay in Germany of 6+ months | 1 |
Example for a recent Indian graduate: a university degree (3) + English B2 (1) + under 35 (2) = 6 points, which meets the threshold. Real eligibility also depends on recognition of your degree and proof of funds.
Requirements beyond points
- Proof of funds: about €1,027 a month, shown as savings or a blocked account. This figure is cited in 2026 guides and is tied to published rates, so confirm it with the German mission.
- Health insurance valid for your whole stay.
- Language: at least A1 German or B2 English.
- Recognised or comparable degree. Check the anabin database or the official recognition route for your qualification.
Processing is commonly reported at 4 to 8 weeks. Apply early and book appointments as soon as your documents are ready.
What you can do in Germany on the Chancenkarte
- Search for a job in your field for up to a year.
- Work up to 20 hours a week in any job, which helps cover living costs.
- Try out jobs through trial employment (Probearbeit) of limited duration.
- Switch to a work permit or EU Blue Card once you have a qualifying offer. The 2026 Blue Card salary thresholds are €50,700 a year, or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations and recent graduates.
Opportunity Card vs job seeker permit vs student route

Can Indian citizens apply for the Germany Opportunity Card?
Yes, if you meet the points and funding requirements. Non-EU nationals, including Indian citizens, can apply for the visa through the German mission in India.
How many points do I need for the Chancenkarte?
Six points, or a fully recognised foreign qualification that qualifies you directly.
Can I work on the Opportunity Card?
Yes. You can work up to 20 hours a week and do trial employment while you look for a qualifying job.
How long is the Opportunity Card valid?
One year. It cannot be renewed, but you can switch to a work visa or Blue Card if you find a qualifying job before it expires.
Is the Opportunity Card better than studying in Germany?
It depends. The card is faster if you already have a degree and experience. Studying first gives you a German degree and an 18-month post-study search period.
How much money do I need for the Chancenkarte?
Guides cite about €1,027 a month in 2026, shown via savings or a blocked account. The amount can change, so verify it with the German mission.
