"Germany or Canada?" is the question almost every Indian student weighing a Master's abroad ends up stuck on in 2026. Both are strong, but they win on completely different things. Here's the honest, number-by-number comparison so you can pick based on your actual priority — money, PR, or speed.
Cost: Germany wins, decisively
Germany's public universities charge no real tuition — only a semester contribution of roughly €100–350 (about ₹9,000–33,000). Total cost of a 2-year Master's including living: roughly ₹20–28 lakh.
Canada is far costlier. Tuition plus living runs ₹40–90 lakh, and you must now show a GIC of about CAD 22,895 (₹14+ lakh) as financial proof up front. If cost is your deciding factor, Germany is in a different league.
Post-study work: Canada is more generous
Canada's PGWP gives up to 3 years of open work permit after graduation. Germany gives an 18-month residence permit to find a job relevant to your degree. Both are workable, but Canada gives you more runway to land and settle.
PR pathway: Canada is faster, Germany is steadier
Canada: Through Express Entry / Canadian Experience Class, an MS grad working ~1 year on PGWP can reach PR roughly 4 years from the start of study — often holding PR by age 26–28. Speed is Canada's biggest draw.
Germany: PR (settlement) typically needs about 5 years of continuous qualifying employment (EU Blue Card holders can qualify faster with B1 German). From enrolment to PR is usually ~6–7 years. Slower, but on a stable, high-wage EU job market.
The honest verdict
Choose Canada if: PR speed is your #1 goal, you're in CS/IT/data/engineering/business, you have IELTS 6.5+, and you can fund a ₹35–50 lakh budget.
Choose Germany if: you want minimal debt, you're open to learning some German, and you value a strong engineering/tech job market over the fastest PR. Note: Germany now attracts a larger share of Indian applicants than Canada, partly because of exactly these economics.
There's no universal winner — only the right fit for your budget, field, and timeline. The mistake is choosing on hype instead of your own numbers.
