Updated June 2026. Once you have an offer, the student visa is the last big hurdle — and the one where avoidable mistakes cost students their intake. Here is the general process, the documents you will need, and a realistic timeline for Indian students.
The general student-visa process
- Accept your offer and receive your enrolment confirmation (CAS for the UK, I-20 for the USA, CoE for Australia, Letter of Acceptance for Canada).
- Show funds — proof you can cover tuition and living costs (bank statements, loan sanction, scholarship letters).
- Pay fees — visa application fee and, where applicable, health surcharge/insurance.
- Biometrics and application — submit your online form and attend a biometrics/visa appointment.
- Interview (notably for the USA) — be clear, consistent and honest about your study and funding plans.
- Decision and travel — once approved, plan arrival around your course start and accommodation.
Documents you will typically need
- Valid passport and offer/enrolment letter
- Proof of funds (and education-loan sanction if applicable)
- Academic transcripts and certificates
- English-test scores or a waiver/MOI letter (more on studying without IELTS)
- Statement of purpose and, sometimes, a study/financial plan
- Health insurance / medical and police clearances where required
A realistic timeline
Start your visa preparation the moment you accept an offer — ideally 2–4 months before your intake. Appointment slots and processing times vary by season and country, and peak intakes get crowded. Late funding documents and weak SOPs are the most common reasons for delay or refusal.
The biggest single lever on approval is a clean, consistent application. AbroBot’s Visa-Chance Estimator flags weak spots before you apply, and our guidance packages include visa support end to end.
