Who Should Write Your LOR?

Academic Professors (Preferred)

Professors who taught you in relevant courses, supervised your final year project, or supervised your research. They carry the most weight for academic MS admissions. Aim for 2 academic LORs.

Research Supervisors

If you did a research internship (IITB, IISC, DRDO, abroad), your research supervisor's LOR is extremely valuable — especially for research-focused programs and PhD applications.

Industry Supervisors

For applicants with 1–3 years of work experience, a strong manager who can speak to your technical skills, leadership, and impact adds credibility for MS programs with industry focus.

Avoid: Deans & VCs

A generic LOR from a Dean or Vice Chancellor who doesn't know you personally is worse than a specific LOR from a junior professor who supervised your project directly.

LOR FAQ

Should I write my own LOR and get professors to sign?

This is common in India but risky. If the writing style doesn't match or contains errors, admissions committees can detect it. If you help draft talking points, make sure the professor genuinely reviews and edits the final letter.

What if a professor refuses to write my LOR?

A polite refusal ("I don't know you well enough") is a signal — a reluctant LOR written to appease you can actively hurt your application. Find someone who will enthusiastically recommend you instead.

Can industry LORs substitute for academic LORs?

For programs that require 2 academic LORs, no. For programs that require 1 academic + 1 professional, yes. Always check each program's specific LOR requirements before approaching recommenders.

Is 1 month enough time to get LORs?

Risky. Professors are busy — give them 6–8 weeks minimum. Last-minute requests result in generic, rushed letters that hurt your application. Start the process 3 months before your first deadline.
