Section Tips

TOEFL Section-by-Section Strategy

Reading (Target: 26+/30)
3-4 passages, 10 questions each. Academic content from textbooks.
Vocabulary questions: know academic word list (AWL). 15 min per passage max.
Prose Summary question (6 marks): highest value — practice identifying main ideas.
Read academic journals daily
Listening (Target: 26+/30)
Note-taking is essential. Use Cornell notes method — topic on left, details on right.
Lectures are 5-6 min. Conversations are 3 min. Both have 5-6 questions.
Practice with academic podcasts: TED-Ed, MIT OpenCourseWare audio.
Listen to US academic accents daily
Speaking (Target: 24+/30)
Task 1: Independent. 15s prep, 45s speak. Give opinion + 2 reasons + example.
Tasks 2-4: Integrated (read/listen then speak). Summarise both sources clearly.
Clarity and coherence matter more than accent. Avoid long pauses.
Record + review yourself daily
Writing (Target: 24+/30)
Task 1 (Integrated): 150-225 words summarising lecture vs reading passage.
Task 2 (Academic Discussion): 100+ words responding to a professor's discussion prompt.
Use varied vocabulary, logical connectors, and clear paragraph structure.
Practice 1 integrated task daily
