What Is a Canadian Study Permit?

The Canadian Study Permit is the immigration document that allows Indian students to study at Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) in Canada. It is not a visa — most Indian students also need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to enter Canada. Both are processed simultaneously through IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada).

SDS vs Regular Stream

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was Canada's fast-track study permit (processing target: 20 days) but was discontinued in November 2024. Indian students now apply through the regular stream, which typically takes 4–12 weeks. Key requirements: valid acceptance letter from a DLI, proof of funds (CAD 20,635 for 2024 + tuition), Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD 10,000, IELTS 6.0+, biometrics, and medical examination.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

After completing a 2-year (or longer) program at an eligible DLI, Indian students can apply for a PGWP valid for up to 3 years. This is the cornerstone of Canada's PR pathway for graduates. Important: as of 2024, programs must be in designated high-demand fields (STEM, healthcare, trades) for PGWP eligibility — check IRCC's updated list before choosing your program.

PR Pathway After Studies in Canada

Common pathways: Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class) — requires 1 year of Canadian work experience post-PGWP; Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) — provinces like Ontario, BC, Alberta actively recruit international graduates; Atlantic Immigration Program — for graduates of Atlantic universities (Dalhousie, Memorial, UNB, UPEI). Candidates with Canadian degrees and PGWP work experience typically receive CRS boosts in Express Entry draws.

Financial Requirements

Proof of funds required: CAD 10,000 GIC (living expenses) + first year tuition + travel costs. Total liquid funds typically need to be CAD 25,000–40,000 for a credible application. Accepted evidence: GIC from a Canadian bank (RBC, Scotiabank, CIBC), bank statements, or education loan sanction letter.

Top Cities & Their University Clusters

Toronto (UofT, Ryerson/TMU, York, OCAD), Vancouver (UBC, SFU, UVic), Montreal (McGill, Concordia, Université de Montréal), Waterloo (UWaterloo, WLU — top for tech), Ottawa (uOttawa, Carleton), Calgary (UCalgary), Edmonton (UAlberta), Halifax (Dalhousie). Each city has distinct living costs — Halifax and Edmonton are significantly cheaper than Toronto or Vancouver.
